Waikato-Tainui says government is breaking a Treaty deal to delay river rules

Waikato-Tainui says the government is breaking a Treaty of Waitangi deal by pausing river protection rules until 2032. The rules come from Te Ture Whaimana, the iwi's agreed plan for the Waikato and Waipā rivers. The iwi says the delay favours government donors and means six more years of river damage. Minister Shane Jones said food security comes first and the pause may last longer.
