International Group Says Democracy Is Gone in Nicaragua
A major international body, the OAS, voted 29-1 on August 19, 2026, to declare that democracy "no longer exists" in Nicaragua. The group says new rules by the country's co-presidents let them ban rival candidates and shut down parties with foreign funding. The OAS wants its foreign ministers to meet urgently, but Nicaragua already left the group in 2023, leaving it powerless to enforce anything.
