Firefighters Say Agency Was Short-Staffed Despite Chief's Claim

Nine US Forest Service firefighters told the Guardian the agency had too few staff during summer 2026 wildfires. That contradicts chief Tom Schultz, who told Congress in July the workforce is "fully staffed and equipped to respond aggressively to every unplanned ignition." The firefighters stayed anonymous because agency rules forbid them speaking publicly.
