Storm Lala Could Become a Hurricane Before Hitting Hawaii

Tropical Storm Lala, with 60 mph winds 420 miles southeast of Hilo, is expected to grow into a hurricane — a storm with winds above 74 mph — before striking Hawaii's Big Island Saturday. NOAA, the nation's weather agency, issued hurricane and tropical storm warnings. Governor Josh Green declared a state of emergency. Up to 25 inches of rain could cause deadly flash floods and mudslides, especially on ground already soaked or scarred by past wildfires. A direct Big Island hit would be the first since Tropical Storm Darby in 2016.
