Severely overdue credit card debt — payments over 90 days late — rose from 7.6% in late 2022 to 12.8% in early 2026, the New York Fed reports. Yet overall missed payments dropped to 4.7%, since mortgages, which most people pay on time, dominate the average. CNBC calls it a "K-shaped divide": some recover, others sink.
