Indonesia's Ancient Gender Tradition Meets Modern Law

The Bugis people of Indonesia have recognized five genders for centuries, including bissu—spiritual leaders who exist outside the male-female divide. Indonesia's government, however, recognizes only two. Rising Islamic conservatism now pressures this pre-Islamic tradition, leaving bissu practitioners in legal uncertainty despite their deep cultural roots.
