Supreme Court Ethics Rules Let Justices Stay on Cases Linked to Industries That Pay Them

A watchdog found Justice Alito made up to $2.9 million from oil and gas investments since 2005. But Supreme Court ethics rules say a justice must only step away from a case if they own stock in a company named in it — not if they profit from the whole industry. Alito used this rule to stay on an October 5 case involving Suncor and ExxonMobil.
