UK Regulator Orders Google to Let Publishers Opt Out of AI Overviews
The UK Competition and Markets Authority is requiring Google to give news publishers and content creators the ability to opt out of having their material scraped for AI Overviews—algorithmic summaries appearing atop search results. The move follows reports that these summaries have reduced traffic to news sites by answering queries directly, undermining the click-through rates publishers depend on. Google has published a formal response supporting the regulator's goals while introducing Google-Extended, a tool letting websites control how their content trains AI models.
