FCC's AI Voice Ban Complicates Aircraft Accident Investigation

The FCC's February 2024 ban on AI-generated voice calls, enacted to combat fraud, now forces aviation investigators to confront a new problem: modern cockpits increasingly rely on synthetic voice alerts. The NTSB's spectrogram analysis, which isolates critical audio signatures from cockpit voice recorders, cannot yet reliably distinguish authentic from AI-generated content. As aircraft systems incorporate more voice synthesis, investigators must develop new authentication methods to ensure evidence integrity in accident probes.
