OpenADR 3.0 and Matter Alignment Unlocks Residential Demand Response at Scale

The OpenADR Alliance and Connectivity Standards Alliance have formalized collaboration around OpenADR 3.0, an IP-based protocol now using REST APIs instead of XML. This technical alignment with Matter's smart home framework eliminates previous protocol-translation friction, allowing utilities to coordinate residential appliances—water heaters, HVAC, EV chargers—as grid-balancing resources. PG&E is conducting the first major utility study on Matter 1.4 integration. The approach builds on OpenADR's 13-year operational history while leveraging Matter's growing device ecosystem, potentially converting millions of consumer devices into flexible grid capacity.
