Second Death in Upper East Side Legionnaires' Outbreak as Cases Subside

A second person died in Manhattan's Upper East Side Legionnaires' outbreak, NYC health officials announced July 18. At least 72 people have been sickened since July 2; nine remain hospitalized. Health Commissioner Dr. Alister F. Martin said the source "has likely been eliminated" after 76 buildings with Legionella-positive cooling towers completed disinfection. New cases have dropped from over eight daily to fewer than one.
