Conservatives pledge 50,000 extra prison places to end early release

The Conservatives under Kemi Badenoch have promised 50,000 new prison places in England and Wales if they return to government. The party said most would be built within five years, at £2bn a year, to end early release and keep serious offenders locked up. Prisons are 98% full, with about 89,000 usable places.
