U.S. Ends Iraq Mission After More Than 20 Years

The Pentagon confirmed Sept. 30 the final U.S. troops in the anti-ISIL mission have left Iraq, ending a 12-year campaign and more than 20 years of U.S. military presence since the invasion to topple Saddam Hussein. The last forces made an "orderly departure" from Erbil Airbase, which hosted 1,500 coalition personnel, according to CENTCOM.
