Google Uses Gradient Icons to Signal AI-Powered Features
Google is rolling out gradient-based icons across Gmail, Sheets, Chat, Maps, and other core applications, replacing the flat circular design language established in 2016. The gradient treatment functions as visual vocabulary: colors transition from pastel to saturated primaries, specifically flagging which features leverage AI. The shift addresses a practical problem—as AI becomes standard across productivity software, companies need ways to distinguish enhanced functionality visually. Whether users adopt the new aesthetic without friction remains to be seen.
