WMO Forecasts El Niño Could Be Strongest in Over 70 Years, Persisting Into Early 2027
The WMO forecasts a strong El Niño rapidly developing during July–September 2026 that could become the strongest in more than 70 years and persist into early 2027. Carbon Brief reported the same finding on 3 September 2026. El Niño is a warming of Pacific Ocean surface temperatures that disrupts global weather patterns, intensifying droughts and floods worldwide.
