Hungary's Parliament Bars 16-Year Prime Ministers From Running Again

Hungary's parliament approved a constitutional amendment barring anyone with at least eight years of cumulative prior service as prime minister from holding the office again. The retroactive provision targets Viktor Orbán, who has governed continuously since 2010. The opposition Tisza party proposed the change, now possible after Fidesz lost its parliamentary supermajority in April 2025 elections. Hungary's Constitutional Court will decide whether the amendment survives legal challenge.
