Nepal-Tibet Border Floods Kill at Least 579, Over 1,500 Still Missing

Flooding along the Nepal-Tibet border has killed at least 579 people as of August 28, 2026, with 538 deaths in Nepal alone, The Hindu reports. More than 1,500 remain missing across Nepal and China's Tibet, per Al Jazeera. Scientists say a glacier chunk broke off and dammed a river, triggering the flood. ICIMOD warns such events will grow more frequent as warming expands unstable glacial lakes across the Hindu Kush Himalaya, home to over 25,000 such lakes.
