Guinea-Bissau's First Mpox Outbreak Hits Children Hardest

Guinea-Bissau has recorded its first-ever mpox outbreak, declared on 4 July 2026. Of 46 suspected cases, roughly half are children under 15, including 16 under age four. Only seven cases are laboratory-confirmed, all adults. UNICEF warns fragile surveillance means the virus is likely spreading undetected, leaving more children at risk in a country with limited paediatric intensive care capacity.
