Labour promises independent Parliamentary Budget Office if elected

Labour's fiscal strategy, released 22 August, includes a commitment to establish an independent Parliamentary Budget Office. The body would cost party policies and forecast the fiscal impact of government decisions independently of Treasury, shifting analytical capacity from the executive to Parliament. Canada, Australia and the UK already operate equivalent institutions. Leader Chris Hipkins said the books would be repaired without cutting services.
