Treasury Doubles Long-Bond Buybacks After 30-Year Yields Hit 2007 Highs

On August 19, 2026, the Treasury doubled its long-term bond buyback cap from $2 billion to at least $4 billion per operation, starting September 9. Thirty-year yields had reached their highest since 2007. After the announcement, 30-year yields fell, stocks, bonds, and gold rallied, and the ICE Dollar Index dropped roughly 0.8% to around 98.
