Treasury to Double Long-Bond Buybacks to $4 Billion Per Operation in September
On August 19, 2026, the U.S. Treasury announced it will double long-end bond buyback operations to at least $4 billion per operation starting in September. The program targets 10- to 30-year off-the-run nominal coupon securities — older, less-liquid bonds — in response to surging long-end yields. The 30-year yield fell nearly 10 basis points to 5.1942% on the news.
