Fiordland peak officially named Mount Kirk for former PM Norman Kirk

A 1436-metre Fiordland peak has been officially named Mount Kirk, recognising former Prime Minister Norman Kirk's 1973 decision to preserve the natural levels of Lakes Manapouri and Te Anau. The Guardians of Lakes Manapouri and Te Anau — the oversight body Kirk established — proposed the name. Land Information Minister Mike Butterick confirmed the New Zealand Geographic Board's decision on 18 August 2026.
