A 30-year-old American man died on Mount Etna after being struck by lightning while hiking toward the summit crater in a zone closed to the public due to an ongoing eruption. The rescue alarm was raised on the evening of August 16. Italian authorities had barred access to the area over volcanic hazards; the lightning compounded that risk.
