Newborn with severe heart defect placed with biological parents after surrogate fled to Texas

A baby born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome was placed in the custody of his biological parents, Nausheen Gilkar and Omar Ahmed of California, after surrogate McKenna West of Alaska refused to terminate the pregnancy and traveled to Texas, an abortion-restricted state. West is challenging the parentage orders, arguing Texas law makes the birth mother the legal mother. Texas AG Ken Paxton secured an emergency court order ensuring the infant received life-saving care. The case tests whether surrogacy contracts from one state can survive a surrogate's relocation to another.
