Spain deploys 35,000 officers ahead of solar eclipse under extreme wildfire risk

Spain activated a national emergency phase and deployed over 35,000 officers ahead of its first total solar eclipse in 114 years on 12 August 2026. AEMET forecasts Very High or Extreme forest fire danger across much of the country. Authorities expect 1.8–2.9 million people to travel to 350+ observation sites in dry rural areas during peak wildfire season, prompting fire bans and natural-area closures.
