OMB Rescinds 2022 TikTok Ban on Federal Government Devices

OMB memo M-26-17, issued August 11, 2026, formally rescinds the 2022 prohibition on TikTok across government-issued devices. The rescission follows a DOJ opinion concluding the statute no longer applies: TikTok now operates under U.S.-controlled ownership via TikTok USDS Joint Venture (Oracle and Silver Lake), with ByteDance retaining a 19.9 percent minority stake. Federal employees may now download and use the app on official hardware.
