Guyana's Idle New Ferry and the Aging Vessel Disaster That Killed ~100
Guyana spent US$12.7 million on a 300-passenger ferry from India to replace the 87-year-old MV Barima on the Georgetown–Port Kaituma route. But the new vessel sat idle — Port Kaituma's pier wasn't finished. The MV Barima kept running and capsized on July 18, 2026, killing roughly 100 people.
