
A Brand-New Ferry Sat Unused While an Old Boat Sank, Killing About 100 People
Guyana bought a US$12.7 million ferry from India to replace an 87-year-old boat called the MV Barima. But the new ferry couldn't dock — the pier at Port Kaituma wasn't built yet. So the old boat kept carrying passengers. On July 18, 2026, it flipped over and around 100 people died.
