Robot Sailboat Leaves Hobart to Circle Antarctica

A 7-metre robot sailboat, Saildrone Explorer SD-1092, left Hobart to circle Antarctica — a 22,000km trip lasting seven to nine months. Running on wind and solar power and tracked by satellite, it will measure carbon dioxide in water and air to better understand how much carbon the Southern Ocean absorbs. It will pass New Zealand, Drake Passage and South Africa.
