Seattle Halts New Data Centers for a Year, Forcing Operators to Look Elsewhere

Seattle's City Council enacted an emergency ban on new large data centers (10 megawatts and above) on 9 June 2026, effective immediately with no transition period. The freeze blocks projects already waiting for approval. Development is expected to shift to nearby areas and Eastern Washington, where abundant hydroelectric power makes expansion cheaper and faster.
