Chantels Lead Singer Arlene Smith Dies at 84

Arlene Smith, lead singer of the pioneering 1950s girl group the Chantels, has died at 84. Her manager, Paul Errante, confirmed the death to the Associated Press. Smith died of a heart attack at a New York City hospital. She co-wrote and sang lead on the 1958 hit "Maybe," a Top 20 single that sold more than a million copies and was later covered by Janis Joplin.
