Schools Group Agrees to Pay $774M for Abuse Claims After Catholic Order Went Broke

A group running former Christian Brothers schools in Australia agreed on July 24, 2026 to take over paying survivors of abuse. The survivors are owed about $774 million, but the Catholic order that ran the schools held only $217 million. EREA, the schools group, had received the Brothers' properties for just $1 each. It will now use its own assets. Survivors and a judge must approve the deal within two months.
