EREA Reverses Course, Agrees to Back $774M in Abuse Claims Against Christian Brothers

EREA, which runs former Christian Brothers schools in Australia, reversed its refusal on July 24, 2026 and agreed to replace the insolvent order as defendant for all current and future abuse claims. Survivors are owed an estimated $774 million; the Brothers held only $217 million. EREA, which received hundreds of millions in $1 property transfers from the Brothers, now backs the claims with its own assets. Creditors vote and a court ruling are due within two months.
