Government to Consider New Safety Rules for Car Door Handles After Tesla Incidents

NHTSA, the federal auto safety agency, said on July 23, 2026 it will start developing new rules for how people get out of vehicles in emergencies. The move follows incidents, some fatal, in which people were trapped inside cars with flush, electronic door handles like those on Teslas. The agency cautioned that starting the process does not guarantee final rules.
