NHTSA to Develop Federal Vehicle Egress Rules After Tesla Door Handle Incidents

NHTSA announced on July 23, 2026 that it will begin developing new federal safety requirements for vehicle egress. The action follows incidents, some fatal, in which people became trapped inside vehicles with flush, electronically operated door handles like those on Tesla vehicles. NHTSA said initiating rulemaking does not guarantee final rules will be adopted.
