New PM Burnham sets up a Downing Street office in Manchester

On his first day as Prime Minister, Andy Burnham opened a Downing Street office in Manchester city centre. A government fact sheet from 22 July 2026 calls it the "engine room" of his plan to focus on places outside London. Burnham expects to work there at least one day a week. The cost will come from existing government budgets.
