Centre that watches for quakes shut for eight hours

The National Geohazards Monitoring Centre — the office that watches for earthquakes and tsunami — closed for eight hours on Friday, from 2pm to 10pm, because there were not enough staff, Earth Sciences New Zealand said. It is usually open day and night. The agency said some alerts and information could be late or limited until it reopened.
