Government books before election expected to look a bit better

Treasury’s pre-election books are expected to show a slightly smaller shortfall this year, RNZ reports. Like a household spending a bit more than earned, it is borrowing a bit less. Economists at Westpac, ANZ and ASB agree the near term looks slightly stronger. Most expect the Budget forecast of surplus — earning more than spent — in 2028/29 to stand.
