Tigray Fighting Spreads to Two Neighboring Areas

Fighters from Ethiopia's Tigray pushed in September 2026 into neighboring Afar and Amhara, taking Abala and firing large guns toward Yallo, with battles near Weldiya. Tigray leaders on Sept. 23 called it self-defense; Ethiopia's army says it stopped the attacks. The 2020-2022 war between the army and the TPLF, Tigray's ruling group, killed about 600,000.
