Scientists Find 166,000 Square Kilometers Where Coral Can Survive Warming Oceans

Researchers have identified roughly 166,000 square kilometers of coral reef that can withstand ocean warming. These "refuge zones"—places where cooler currents and stable conditions protect coral—represent the first global map of where coral colonies have the best chance to recover between heat stress events, according to a study published in Conservation Letters in June 2026.
