New Dunedin Hospital building opens, but the main one is years away

A new $440 million building at Dunedin Hospital opened on 28 August. Patients will start being seen there in October. But the main building, where people stay overnight for treatment, won't open until 2031. Rising costs and a January 2025 plan to cut beds sparked a protest of 35,000 people — Dunedin's biggest in decades.
