UK to require bailiffs to get official approval in £1bn debt-collection sector

Private bailiffs — people hired to collect unpaid debts — in England and Wales will need approval from a watchdog to keep working, PM Andy Burnham announced. The industry handles over 7 million cases yearly and collects more than £1 billion. Some companies have refused voluntary oversight. The new rules will not fully take effect until 2027.
