US Starts Sending Deportees to Liberia in Unusual New Agreement

On August 20, Liberia received 20 people the US deported — the first of up to 1,200 it has agreed to take over the next year. They come from Africa, the Americas, and the Caribbean, not from Liberia itself. Think of it as the US sending people to a country that isn't theirs. Liberia's justice minister says they may apply for protection there. It is among the Trump administration's biggest such deals.
