Japanese City Closes All Schools Due to Bear Attacks
Utsunomiya, a city of 500,000 north of Tokyo, shut down all 94 public schools on June 9 after bears kept entering the area and breaking into school buildings. One bear smashed through glass doors; another was found in a home and put to sleep with medicine. Such widespread closures usually happen only for typhoons or earthquakes, showing how serious the wildlife problem has become.
