France has detained about 2,000 people, mostly children, in school protests

French authorities have detained about 2,000 people, most of them children, since student protests over school conditions began, Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin said. The protests started in Paris and spread to cities including Montpellier, Nantes and Marseille over lack of teachers, overcrowded classrooms and run-down buildings. Detention on this scale will test how France balances order and youth rights.
