Becerra and Hilton spar over Trump, taxes, immigration in only governor debate

Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton met Oct. 1, 2026, in the sole televised debate of the California governor's race, according to AP and The New York Times. The hourlong debate was their only scheduled meeting. They sparred over President Trump, taxes and immigration.
