Becerra and Hilton meet in only TV debate to lead California

Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton met Oct. 1, 2026, in the race to lead California, AP and The New York Times said. It was their only planned one-hour TV debate. They disagreed over President Trump, taxes and immigration.
