National promises digital trans-Tasman travel trial by 2028 World Cup

National says, if re-elected at the 2026 general election, it will work with Australia on a fully digital trans-Tasman trial for New Zealand and Australian citizens. Tourism spokesperson Louise Upston said travellers would use smartphones and biometrics instead of paper passports in time for the 2028 Men's T20 World Cup. Biosecurity checks would remain.
