National promises phone-based trans-Tasman travel trial for 2028

National says if re-elected in 2026 it will work with Australia on a fully digital trans-Tasman trial for New Zealand and Australian citizens. Tourism spokesperson Louise Upston said travellers would use smartphones and biometrics — face or fingerprint scans — instead of paper passports for the 2028 Men's T20 World Cup. Biosecurity checks would stay.
