
US to leave last Iraq bases by Sept. 30, ending 20-year presence
US forces were set to leave their last bases in Iraq by September 30, 2026, closing about two decades of military presence. A few hundred advisers remained in the north, consolidated at Erbil airbase, supporting the anti-ISIL coalition Operation Inherent Resolve. Baghdad says future ties will shift from military to economic cooperation.
